Newton has been supporting NASA’s GEDI project in a variety of capacities.
GEDI (pronounced “Jedi”) stands for Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation. GEDI produces high resolution laser ranging of Earth’s Forests and Topography. It will be launched on the International Space Station in late 2018. Essentially, GEDI will take the most detailed scan’s of the world’s forest that have ever been produced while specifically measuring the carbon in Earth’s forests.
The goal of this project is to be able to better understand the role that trees play in the carbon cycle. According to NASA’s website, “The scientific goal of the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation Lidar (GEDI) is to characterize the effects of changing climate and land use on ecosystem structure and dynamics to enable radically improved quantification and understanding of the Earth’s carbon cycle and biodiversity.”
Newton has provided comprehensive engineering services from specification development to test definition and planning support. Not only does Newton provide engineering services for this project, but we have also created a fully-functional model, the Beam Adjustment Mechanism (BAM). This model demonstrated the mechanism’s design maturity and capabilities and was used as a marketing tool for project stakeholders to approve additional funding for the GEDI mission.
