Core 2 Assembly and Testing

Newton engineers led the assembly and testing of the Core-2 assembly in preparation for its cryogenic thermal performance testing, completed in April 2016.

“Core-2” is a high-fidelity copy of the JWST key mechanical and cryogenic hardware and interfaces. JWST’s deployed size is too large for test facilities and would require complicated off-loading of delicate deployable instruments for traditional thermal balance testing. Core-2 allows the JWST team to assemble and test critical hardware interfaces without jeopardizing the flight-ready JWST structure.

Working under a tight, 6-month schedule, Newton engineers collaborated directly with NASA and multiple contractor teams to ensure that Core-2 was assembled and ready for critical pre-flight testing.
