DSCOVR, MMS & LRO (Spacecraft Deployable Systems)

MMS – Our engineers designed, assembled, integrated and tested the Magnetometer Booms on all four Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission spacecraft. We developed the composite tube boom design, and constant force self-deployable hinges, we integrated a commercial deployment release device, while also assembling and testing the booms for NASA GSFC.

LRO – Newton engineers developed the Solar Array Drive Assembly (SADA) used on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission for NASA GSFC. We integrated commercial stepper motors with custom-designed Cable Wrap mechanisms to create the two-axis gimbal SADA. Our engineers supported the LRO SADA Gimbal mechanical hardware and electrical harnessing development efforts from design through assembly, integration and test.

DSCOVR – Newton engineers support the on-going development of the DSCOVR Observatory self-deployable solar arrays, which are secured stowed with commercial wax actuators and deployed using torsion springs on a free-fixed hinge line.
