Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM)

Posing a great challenge, the 1:1 scale model of the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite required off-the-shelf motors and lights in very tight spaces. This model simulates all the major motions of the SAM instrument which include a flip open gas inlet cover, a rotating Martian soil carousel, an elevator that moves a “cup” to the carousel, and ovens that “heat up” the gases and soil samples. Some parts of the model were redesigned to embed different systems, including custom programming for electronics and software to control the model’s variety of functions.
